OMNI Ethiopia has completed EMIC — Empowered Media-Informed Communities — its flagship 2025 media development project, training journalists and broadcasters from 30 community radio stations across Ethiopia.  Funded by GIZ and implemented with DW Akademie and the Ethiopian Media Council, EMIC strengthened the capacity of community radio journalists to report on governance, elections, and civic issues with accuracy, credibility, and community relevance.

WHAT THE PROJECT DELIVERED

Through the programme, OMNI Ethiopia trained 178 journalists across five topic areas: Anti-Paid-for-Loyalty (APL), Election Reporting, Basic Radio Journalism, Community Reporting, and Media Viability and Financial Sustainability.  The project also produced four practical training handbooks and supported the production of 188 radio episodes across the participating community radio network.  Equipment support of €200,000 was delivered to partner stations, strengthening their technical capacity to produce and broadcast quality community journalism.  OMNI’S ROLE OMNI Ethiopia served as the lead implementing partner, responsible for training design and delivery, handbook development, content production support, mentorship for station teams, and coordination of equipment distribution.

WHY IT MATTERS

Community radio remains one of the most trusted and accessible sources of information for many Ethiopians, especially communities underserved by national media. By strengthening community radio journalists, EMIC contributes to more informed, more engaged, and more resilient communities across Ethiopia.  OMNI Ethiopia thanks GIZ, DW Akademie, and the Ethiopian Media Council for their partnership and commitment to community media development.  Source: OMNI Ethiopia Organizational Profile
